ESP / Stability Control Light

Investigate soon. Driving short distances is generally okay, but book a diagnostic check.

What the ESP / Stability Control Light Means

The ESP / stability control light on a your car indicates the electronic stability program is either active (flashing) or has a fault/is switched off (steady). ESP helps prevent skids by braking individual wheels, so a steady light means that safety net may be unavailable.

Common Causes

  • ESP switched off manually
  • Wheel speed sensor fault
  • Steering angle sensor needs calibration
  • Brake light switch fault
  • ABS module fault

How to Fix It

  1. Check the ESP off button has not been pressed
  2. Restart the car and drive a short distance
  3. Scan for stability-control codes
  4. Recalibrate the steering angle sensor if needed
  5. Repair the underlying sensor or switch fault
